Music Therapy for the Autistic Child


Abstract
I wish to express my sincerest thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Lemon of UNIV. of NEB. MEDICAL center without whose untiring assistance in collecting the necessary materials made this thesis possible.
The purpose of this study is in experimenting on the effects of specially programmed Music Therapy for the Autistic child in hopes of contributing to the enhancement of their education.
All children who took part in the music therapy received clinical check-ups and educational evaluation prior to participation. The subjects consist of ten autistic children attending the speech and hearing center of EWHA because of special Education needs.
The experiments focused on music therapy¢¥s effects on interpersonal relationship, response to sounds, reach in to other objects, speech development of potential ability of the autistic child.
The results of the experiment are as follow:
(1) It is evident that music therapy affects the physical and motor development in the autistic child.
(2) Music -therapy can be utilized as a stimulant as well as an "attention getting" agent in language acquisition and development.
(3) Music therapy positively affects intelligent and cognitive abilities.
(4) Music therapy plays an important role in the development of the emotional and social stability and affective domains.
Despite the number of participants (subjects) in the experiments were very limited, I have arrived at the conclusion that music therapy is significant in the education of autistic chidren. In view of the autistic children, I feel that there is a dire need for the application of music therapy to other physically, emotionally and socially exceptional children.
